What's on Your Mind?

I have set up this blog to give you a place to share you ideas, opinions, concerns, fears, and stories that you have expressed that you have wanted to express in class, but due to time constraints we are unable to do. So, here, you can say what's on your mind.

Many of you have expressed concerns about your community or school, or your future. Many of you have the same fears. We can learn from one another. And we may not agree with one another. That's okay. Here's your opportunity to "Just Say It....."

and don't forget to spell check! :)

The Diversity Discussion

In class last week we had a discussion about diversity, prejudice, stereotypes, and hate crimes and then watched the movie "The Station Agent". If you haven't seen this movie, I would recommend it as it is a good example of how easy it is to make judgment of others based on their exterior and not their interior.

One of my students made mentioned that which is "unseen" about an individual versus that which is "seen", and this movie certainly highlighted that aspect of the characters.

The movie brings together 3 main characters that based on first impressions and appearance do not seem likely to run in the same circle or "go together", so to speak. And we talked in class about how we often tend to people watch or make judgements about whether people or couples "go together" based upon their outward appearances.

This film helped us to realize what we are supposed to know is true anyway--that it's what's inside a person that matters. The development of the relationships through the film is pretty powerful and made us stop to think about our own relationships and how those had developed and what really brings people together.

I hope we all learned, or "re-learned", a valuable lesson in acceptance of differences. And I think we all realize we still have lot to learn and some bad habits to break and obstacles to overcome.

I would like to have students share their comments regarding the film, or any experiences regarding diversity, prejudice, stereotypes, etc.
